Vía Volcán is what Boquete was twenty years ago: a genuinely Panamanian mountain road with no tour agency on every corner, working coffee farms right on the roadside, and locals who know every waterfall by name.
The route connects David with the town of Volcán along the southern slope of Volcán Barú at around 1,200 metres above sea level. The climate is cool without being cold, the landscape shifts from savanna to cloud forest within a few kilometres, and everything is on or within walking distance of the highway. No advance bookings, no agencies, no dress code.
The Buena Vista Arriba, Bugaba area — roughly halfway between David and the town of Volcán — has the best of it: a plant nursery with no equal in Panama and a family café overlooking fields of wild sunflowers. This is the stop that tourism guides haven't discovered yet.

How to Get to Vía Volcán
Vía Volcán has no airport of its own, but access from David is direct and simple.

40 minutes by car via the northern Interamericana, following signs for Volcán. The nursery is approximately at km 28, in the Bugaba area.
🚌 Bus from David
David Transport Terminal → buses to Volcán every ~30 min. Journey: 50–60 minutes. Ask the driver to call out the Buena Vista Arriba stop.
🧭 From Boquete

Along Vía Volcán there are spots where the cone of Barú — Panama's tallest volcano at 3,474 m — appears clear on crisp mornings. The best roadside viewpoints are between km 25 and 35. Views are sharpest between January and March.

Dry season (January–April): ideal for Barú viewpoints and quetzal sightings. Days are bright and the volcano is clear from early morning. January and February are the peak months.
Rainy season (May–November): the landscape turns spectacularly green. The nursery plants grow vigorously, waterfalls have more flow and there are fewer visitors. Rain is typically in the afternoon — leaving David early gives you a dry morning.
December: a transition month with mixed days. Cerro Punta flowers for the Christmas market are at peak — the town of Volcán fills with colour.
